How To Make The Perfect Bow

This is a video I did on the set of TMI last year. I show you step by step how to make a bow like the pros. My mom taught me and now I’m passing the secret on to you.

The key to a pretty package is having quality paper and ribbon. Paper is easier to find, but the only ribbon I use for the above bow is C&G (Pattern 800 Satin). At The Container Store or Michael’s it will run you $10-15 a spool, online I found it for $6.

You can stop at the bow, but I like adding fresh or silk flowers to complete the look.

Photoshopping my face with Eve Pearl Products

As you saw in our TMI weekly episode featuring Eve Pearl, creme makeup doesn’t have to be thick and cakey. In fact, when applied correctly, they look more natural than liquid foundations.

I am now a huge fan of the products you see above:

All three help highlight your natural features in a different way.

As Eve explains in the episode, the darker foundation covers up redness (cheeks, chin, nose, forehead) while the lighter evens out the rest of my face. The two colors also slightly contour my face because the darker color is amplifies my bone structure. Set the look with translucent or loose powder.

Most people use concealer that is too yellow and light under their eyes which looks anything but natural. The salmon color works with the purple and camouflages the darkness.

Finally, the lip gloss that looks likes something a Vegas showgirl would wear, is sheer and provides a soft glow. I would have never picked up these two colors, but Eve insisted I try it. Now I’m in love with both (one has an orange tint and the other has a pink).

Admittedly, the products are expensive but fall within the price range of department store brands. The difference is that Eve Pearl products are infused with nutrients to double as anti-aging treatments. And as Meghan can attest, they don’t feel heavy like other foundations.

Because of the price, I only use the foundation when I need my face to last all day or on special occasions. If I’m only out for a few hours, I use Aveeno Positively Radiant tinted moisturizer (in Medium) with powder. The salmon concealer and lip gloss are daily musts for me.

You know, I don’t have a problem being 27 and unmarried. But dating these days sucks. Period.

Most of the girls I know from high school and college no longer have this problem. In fact, they haven’t had to deal with this for a while because they got married soon after college.

In this episode of TMI I sit down with a couple of my girlfriends from high school to talk about what it’s like to get married so young. People always say it will never last, but I don’t think that’s true. Listen to Whitney and Alyssa, they are honest and open about how they work through all of it.

Jacyln says:

I dislike the commonly-held notion that getting married young is a mistake. I was married a day after my 22nd birthday and Brandon was 26. That’s considered very young, as I was told (rudely) by many people. Is it hard? Yes. Does it take a lot of work? Yes. But, then again, so does any marriage at any age.

Here is my unofficial primer for marriage, whether you are 21 or 41.

Ask yourself these questions:

Are you a selfish person? Do you find the thought of making sacrifices for someone else uncomfortable? If you can’t answer a definitive no, you shouldn’t get married.

Can you be honest about your thoughts and feeling on any subject without feeling pressure to compromise to the popular opinion? If you can’t express exactly what you want to someone else without fear of retribution, you shouldn’t get married.

Are you willing to make friendships a lesser priority than the needs of your spouse? Friends are important, but a spouse is a partner—another half of you. If they’ve had a bad day, you have to prioritize how your evening plays out.

Could you share a bank account without fearing what your significant other may find in the transactions? If you can’t be honest about finances or about what you spend your money on, you shouldn’t get married.

Do you have a supportive, loving family who has legitimate concerns about your fiance? You shouldn’t get married to them.

Consider your motives for marriage. If your spouse is not the first thing that pops into your head—if it’s a dress, your other married friends or a giant ring, then maybe you shouldn’t get married.

Can people honestly describe you as a mature, grounded individual? If not, then you might not be ready for marriage.

Have you cheated on a serious girlfriend/boyfriend/fiance/fiancee before? It’s natural to have the occasional fantasy. If you act on it, that’s a whole different maturity issue and/or emotional problem.

Are you getting married to get around the issue of no-premarital-sex that your religion or family dictates? You shouldn’t get married.

I’m no expert and context can change everything, but these are some general rules that I’ve found to be fairly accurate in their prediction of marital success. Brandon and I had serious, serious conversations before we got engaged. It was no flippant exercise of “the next step.” It was a deliberate, loving decision—which is exactly what you should think of it as. A decision: not a party, not a dress, not a ring, not a sign of social status, nothing. It’s all about the other person and what you want out of your life together.

Getting married young has nothing to do with the success of a marriage. Marital success depends entirely on the individual.

Jackie you have really nailed it. I completely agree with all the points you have made.

That is exactly what getting ready for marriage means, stripping down to the core. You need everything in the open your heart, finances, soul, fantasies, dreams, fears, and habits. You need to be willing to say “Yes you may take of my time, my mind, my money, my abilities, my body, and my soul and I will take of yours, unselfishly.”

Kevin and I often discuss this subject and find that most of our peers have a very hard time understanding the concept that only when you completely let go do you really have freedom in your relationship. A lot of people our age feel that they have to “have this be mine” or “have that be mine” in order for them to be happy but what they don’t realize is that as long as they are holding on to those things whether it be friends, hobbies, habits, or ex girlfriends they will never succeed in the relationship.

I liken marriage to taking all your clothing off and jumping into the ocean together. You see everything, he/she sees everything and you are doing something scary but you are doing it together and completely in sync.

My outfit for tomorrow poolside at the Roosevelt. Had to put the sunnies on to get the full effect.

As great purchases usually occur (like the fabulous Ranjana Khan necklace), I had no intention of buying a bathing suit the other day. In fact, I wasn’t shopping at all when I went to the Brentwood Country Mart to have $2 tacos with Andy.

But he sent me to see Turpan, and on my way, I passed this little number in Malia Mills that drew me right into the boutique. Clever.

Tried it on in white first then decided to go with my initial gut feeling and slipped on the print.

Bam! Loved it!

And I love that it’s a one piece. Now that I’ve taken up enjoying a Corona with 2 limes when laying by the pool, the extra coverage will come in handy. And it’s still sexy (or at least I think it shows off the little I have in the best possible light). The tie is my favorite part because I can do it at least three different ways.

One-pieces and vintage cuts are making a pretty strong comeback now, and I don’t believe they have to be overly revealing to be sexy. Doesn’t the female figure do that for itself?

This was one of the the things I was trying to post the other day but my iPhone sabotaged my plan. My Mac will not fail me tonight :)

I rushed to see “The September Issue” opening day. I was super-excited to see the genius that is Anna Wintour in action and, believe me, she does not disappoint.

But the breakout star of the movie for me was Vogue’s Creative Director, Grace Coddington. Her creativity and fortitude inspired me to produce my own shoot.

With the help of some friends, I executed everything from beginning to end – location scouting (ok, so it was my own apartment), casting, (my girls), styling (Lizzie’s forte), lighting, posing, shooting…

I loved being behind the camera and think I may have found my new calling.

We had so much fun – I’m sure there will be more to come. Here are the Head to Toes on my best girls…

WTF with this dress?!

On the latest episode of TMI (5 Things Can You Learn For Free), I am wearing this red dress that looks horrendous! I mean just awful.

HOWEVER, it did not look like this when I tried it on standing up. In fact, everyone loved it! And my friend who reps the line (Bones and Roses) looks awesome in it too.

It’s obviously the open sleeve revealing my linebacker shoulders that throws the look. I should have gone with one of the closed-sleeve styles. I wish someone behind the camera would have mentioned that (ahem…), but you can’t win ‘em all right?

We can’t get everything in life for free. And sometimes it makes sense to spend a little more on certain things. Let’s call it an investment. So, with all the money you’re saving due to our thrifty TMI tips, you can afford to spend a little more when it’s important.

Check out this Divine Caroline article “Ten Things it Makes Sense to Spend a Little More On.” Here’s how it directly effects me:

1) A Mattress – I have a memory foam mattress. I love my memory foam mattress. Completely worth it!

2) A Refrigerator – Perhaps my fridge wouldn’t have smelled so bad after leaving the cheese from my wine and cheese party in it for a week if I’d spent a little more?

3) Running Shoes – I’m training for the marathon. Need I say more.

4) Food. Sometimes. – I’m trying to eat raw. Sometimes. Healthy food often costs more. Plus, taking out definitely costs more, and it’s a lot simpler to buy pre-made raw food than to have to not cook it yourself.

5) Medical Expenses - I don’t have insurance. Not sure if I can weigh in on this one.

6) An Accountant – I’m not particularly good at math…and I don’t screw around with the IRS.

7) Mental Health – Sometimes I definitely think I need this expense. Sometimes I think everybody does. Is this just the crew I roll with?

8) Quality Furniture – I have practically no furniture now. I’ll take this into consideration since I’m currently redecorating.

9) A Hybrid Car – If it’s good enough for Leo, Cameron and Julia, it’s good enough for me.

10) Durable Pans and Knives – I don’t cook and don’t not cook raw all that often. Not top on my priority list.

But realistically speaking, you’re probably already paying for cable and the internet or you’re getting it from work or the library or, from what I understand, public parks in Europe (which btw we should really get moving on in the US) in which case we can consider it gratis. So, we’re going to go with yes.

“Urban Dictionary is the slang dictionary you wrote.”

In this week’s episode of TMI Weekly, Julia cites Dictionary.com’s “Word of the Day” as one of her favorite things you can learn for free. And here I thought her extensive vocabulary came from her prestigious Georgetown education!

Well, I’m a big fan of Urban Dictionary for some free learnin’. The quirky definitions crack me up and half of the words I think are real are actually made up. A lot of the words are computer and tech terms from the last several years which is always so much fun for a technology blogger.

I’ve heard that when Miss Julia doesn’t know a slang word someone uses she fronts (puts on a fake or false personality; not keeping it real; Falsely represents), gets all shady (shifty, sly, suspicious, dark, low, low-profile) and looks it up on her iPhone. What a sketchball – (shady character)!

Here are some of my recent favorites:

Canniversary: A year from the date on which you were fired from a job.

Cookie Duster: A full mustache capable of dusting the tops of cookies.

Manther: The male version of a cougar; older man who preys on younger women.

Facebrag: To use Facebook as a platform to brag. Normally about a job, internship, trip, purchase or anything else that nobody really needs to know but you’d like to tell everyone because you’re awesome.

Tech-Flu: A mysterious illness one contracts just after purchasing expensive electrical (usually home entertainment classed) devices.

Look how sweet my Kitty Ball is?

After seeing my TMI episode on herb gardening, she knew I was interested in growing my own, but also that I would never do it without a little kick in the ass. (I love the sweet and sassy gifts!)

So she brought over a already growing “Italian” herb pot as a housewarming gift. Not only is it already growing, but it also needs very little maintenance. Yes, my black thumb is that bad!

Delicious Dish - Cashew Tapenade

A favorite from Chef Aaron (a friend’s personal chef). I am whipping it up this weekend for guests and thought you might want to as well. It strikes me as more of a fall dish, but it’s been chilly here at night so I think it will go over as a welcome change.

2 garlic cloves crushed
4 roasted, deseeded and peeled red peppers
1-2 bunch cilantro
6oz roasted cashews
10 quality sun-dried tomatoes
1 lemon
Extra Virgin Olive Oil

-Puree or crush in a mortar and pestle all ingredients except V.O.O.

-Once all ingredients are pureed add olive oil to reach the desired consistency. Add lemon juice to taste.

-Season to taste with freshly ground pepper and sea salt.

The only spot I think she missed is Kitchenette in Tribeca (it’s like Bubby’s but better). I always get the “Lumberjack Breakfast” - two egg (whites) scrambled, two wheat pancakes, and two of the best turkey sausage meatballs you’ll ever lay your lips on.

Getting Out Of Your Head

Today’s TMI reminded me it’s important to do things that allow me to truly get out of my head and let loose for a while.

I’ve been in a funk for the last two days, and it’s been pretty difficult to shake. Not even 30/60/90 worked!

In the TMI episode, I explain why I think I enjoyed the sock hop experience, aside from just learning the steps.

This weekend, try to find something to do that allows you to set the weight of your world aside and just have fun. Attempt an activitiy that does not involve the following:

Cell phone
The gym
Work
Anything on your To Do list
Alcohol

Brainstorm now. Don’t stress about it, that would defeat the purpose. But give it some thought. Here are some things I’ve been surprised I like to do:

Wash the car
Grocery shop
Take my time to cook a real meal - even if that takes the whole afternoon

Things I thought I enjoyed but really don’t:

Lay out
Shop for specific clothes or beauty products
Stay out late
Drive
Research vacations

I love pulling wardrobe for our TMI shoots. We’ve been able to incorporate some innovative new designers to pair with pieces from our own wardrobe. And now the girls and getting involved in styling too! Megs did a great job in finding dresses in Jessie James (her favorite NYC boutique) that Julia and I both loved.

Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince made $22.2 million in midnight ticket sales at 3, 003 locations. This has put the movie on track for a record breaking debut today and through the weekend. This Potter film even beat the 18.5 million-record midnight earning of last year's The Dark Night. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince could very easily gross $57 to $58 million for the day. SUMMER SUNDAY DIY

My mom used to make us wash the car when I was I little, so I never really considered it a “fun” thing to do. Until the other day…

I wanted to be outside doing something (anything but sitting still in the heat) so I decided, “hey, I’ll wash the car.” I turned up some tunes, soaked down a sponge and got to work. Thirty minutes later, the car was looking spiffy, I was pretty sweaty, and my urge to enjoy the beautiful day was satisfied.

With the humidity of summer on the rise and the bedhead look way in, I've been snooping around for a hair product that will help my mane looked tousled in all the right places.

Here's what I found:

Chris Brown...GUILTY.

Chris Brown pleas guilty in the assault to ex-girlfriend and pop star Rhianna. Brown's plea baragin consists of 180 days in labor domestic violence program and a five year probation. Chris Brown will face no jail time, however, if he violates probation he will get four years in prison. The judge also issued a stay-away order, that requires Brown and Rhianna to stay 50 yards away from each other, except for at industry event in which case they must stay 10 yards away from each other. You know you’re curious!!!

My mom came home with these the other day. My first reaction was “hell yes, I’ve been dying to try them.”

Then I had to ask, “Mom, did you get a little impulsive one night?” She said her friend Trish bought them for her because she had such success getting off the peach fuzz on her face.

Well, I finally gave it a shot on my upper lip today (where there is the smallest amount of baby fine blonde hair). After a few circles with the gray sand paper (which is basically what it is), the hair remains and my upper lip is BURNING!!!! Seriously. My mom thinks I’m crazy and is going to try it out later. Her skin is less sensitive than mine.

I’ll give it another shot in a less sensitive spot later. But thus far, big let down.

Raising The Bar

As I write the post on Sherng-Lee’s video, I’m feeling truly privileged to work with Sherng-Lee Huang (director and editor) and Kathleen Grace (our producer) on TMI. They are both so talented in their respective fields.

You know how when you’re playing sports, you always play better when your opponent is skilled as opposed to mediocre? Sure you could easily wipe the court with the average player, but you bring your A game to play against the big dog. What I’m trying to say (not very well) is that these two inspire me to work harder on the show everyday. Being a perfectionist, I’m pretty meticulous, to the point they want to kill me sometimes I’m sure. But, in the end, it always pays off.

SO! Look forward to some great new stuff on TMI. They’ve revamped our website for starters. We’re finally using our Twitter and Facebook (I know, late to the game). But the girls and I have been working with Kathleen on making the show itself not only more entertaining, but also more relevant.

They’re a simpler version of a recipe by champion pit master Chris Lilly, author of the new Big Bob Gibson’s BBQ Book, who cooks his ribs entirely on the grill. To follow Lilly’s example, use a thermometer to keep the temperature at a steady 250 and wrap the ribs in foil after adding the apple cider mixture.

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup dark brown sugar
4 teaspoons garlic salt
4 teaspoons pure ancho chile powder
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper
1/2 cup apple cider
1/4 cup apple jelly, melted
1/4 cup honey
2 racks baby back ribs (about 4 pounds total)
1 cup prepared barbecue sauce

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 250°. In a bowl, mix 1/4 cup of the sugar with the garlic salt, chile powder, salt, black pepper, celery salt, cayenne, cinnamon and white pepper. Transfer 1 tablespoon of the spice mix to a medium bowl and whisk in the cider, apple jelly, honey and the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar.
Pull the membrane off the underside of each rib rack using a towel to grasp the corner. On a rimmed baking sheet, rub the ribs with the remaining spice mix; bake, meaty side up, for 2 1/2 hours. Pour the cider mixture over the ribs and turn to coat. Tightly cover with foil and bake for 1 hour.
Light a grill. Uncover the ribs and brush with the barbecue sauce; grill over moderate heat, turning and brushing, until glazed, 15 minutes. Let rest for 10 minutes, then cut between the bones and serve.

DELICIOUS DISH - BASIC GRILLING (by Tim Love)

Here are the basic steps to grilling beef ribs if you’re new to the open flame:

Light a grill.
Cut in between the bones to separate the rack into individual ribs.
Grill the ribs over moderate heat, turning, until crusty and sizzling, about 10 minutes.
Brush generously with the barbecue sauce and grill, turning, until deeply glazed, about 5 minutes longer.
Serve the ribs, passing the extra sauce on the side.

As Sam from Salt Lick says on our TMI grilling episode, you can use any tomato-less bbq sauce with a high sugar content. If you’re not making the sauce yourself (Click here for Tom’s Sticky BBQ Beef Rib recipe), I highly suggest ordering the sauce from Salt Lick - it’s my all time favorite.

Just because you’re not going to make the brisket or ribs doesn’t mean you can’t spice up your meat with some southern sauce.

Salt Lick Original is hands down my favorite bbq sauce. A very, I mean VERY close second is Goode Company’s Original.

Both make great (and affordable) gifts for people (not just men) who like to cook or grill.

My fashion tip for the summer is buying oversized. I get cute XXL shirts from the clearance section, throw on a belt and voila, a new sundress. I also do this with long skirts. Just hoist the waistband up to your underarms and add a belt to define the waist.

Yes, that’s me on a jumbo-tron in the middle of Times Square!

The last 24 hours have been quite the whirlwind. Between the Webby’s and yesterday’s BFF event, my life feels utterly surreal. Initially, I was tentative about shooting an episode for TMI Weekly in the middle of Times Square’s madness, but the BFF event for DoSomething.org was well worth it. It was a surprising treat to see that the crew from My Space’s new web show, BFF had arranged for Jules and I to do our intros with our photos displaying in the background.

It reminded me of when I was 8 yrs old and I saw my father’s company name blinking in bright lights in the middle of Times Square, never did I imagine that one day my face would also be sprawled and pixilated for the entire Times Square lunchtime crew to see- HA!
